Microdermabrasion

Diamond Microdermabrasion FAQ’s

Diamond Microdermabrasion is an electrical device used to clean, refine and smooth the skin surface.

It is an alternative to chemical peeling. It uses a manual device so is therefore chemical free.

A hand piece imbedded with tiny diamond particles is glided over your skin to buff the surface and suction is used to vacuum up the dead skin.

This stimulates healthy reactions in the deeper layers of the skin.

Microdermabrasion enhances the benefits of any topical applications of skin care applied immediately after.

What is dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion was a treatment offered by skin specialists many years ago as a treatment to remove many superficial aging skin problems. They were still doing it back in the 80’s and 90’s.

It was mainly used before the Laser resurfacing treatments became more popular.

It was performed in the operating theatre under anaesthetic as it was an extremely painful procedure.

It involved the doctor scrubbing the skin surface with a harsh sand paper like instrument that took almost all the skin off.

There was a long recovery process where the skin was then allowed to regrow.

The results were very severe but amazing?

Initialling the skin was raw. Then like any healing wound skin it would become fine pink skin. This pink skin remained for quite a few weeks (possibly longer) and required application of thick cosmetics every day to protect it and to disguise the pink colour. As the skin healed, normal skin colour would return but it would be a much lighter colour as this new skin had all pigmentation removed during the dermabrasion treatment.

The resulting skin would be dramatically smoother and refined with less wrinkles and fine lines. Almost any discolourations would have been removed so the skin was definitely younger in appearance. However, it was a treatment limited to the face area only. So the neck would be untreated and this would often show an obvious demarcation line where the dermabrasion treatment had stopped. Also from then on the client would have to be extremely careful with any sun exposure as the NEW skin would be very vulnerable to sun burn and sun damage.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Unlike dermabrasion – microdermabrasion is a finer lighter treatment.

It is performed without pain – in fact it can be quite a relaxing experience.

It has NO downtime requiring no healing or time off work.

The small device is a pen like structure which is hollow with a suction machine attached.

The tip of the device has a specially designed head or surface containing very fine artificial diamond particles that are used to scrub the surface of the skin.

Each head has a specific fine grade of particle similar to fine sand paper or nail files allowing the beauty therapist to use a fine or coarse head to scrub the skin. A special filter is inserted into the head and during the procedure the suction pulls the dead skin being scrubbed off to be trapped in the filter.

The suction is also working as a form of intense massage on the skin and its underlying structures and a form of lymphatic drainage massage is performed during the Microdermabrasion procedure.

The procedure is gently removing the dead skin on the surface of the treated skin and this forms a fine visible powder which can be seen after the procedure on the filter.

During the procedure the dead skin can also be observed being removed. Often the suction is also gently pulling out fine clogs present in the pore openings and if you ask for a mirror you can observe this happening.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

  • Any form of exfoliation of the skin results in the stimulation of the skin and underlying structures.
  • As this is a manual physical procedure and is chemical free which can be easier for some sensitive skin but the care must be used for other sensitivities as it is still stimulating.
  • This stimulation improves the health of the skin, improving the feel, texture and smoothness.
  • Pigmentation is lightened as the dead “darker” layers of Tanned skin are removed.
  • Removing the build up of dead skin clears the surface of flaking and dull skin.
  • Moisturisers penetrate more easily and the skin becomes more supple.
  • (Observe the removal of hard dead skin on the hands and feet)

We can incorporate Microdermabrasion in your facials

We love to include microdermabrasion in our facials as it gives an incredible intense surface clean to your skin especially if you have experienced some harsh weather and the skin has a toughened surface. It’s like giving your skin a thorough vacuum and scrub that easily removes the dead skin that lingers and makes your skin seem dull and rough. Your skin will feel smooth and silky and will readily absorb the lovely serums we apply afterwards. It is amazing to see the filter used to capture the removed dead skin and this treatment is not restricted to just the face – we are able to treat the back of your hands, your neck and chest and any area of skin that has become dry and rough.

Microdermabrasion can be a standalone 30 minute skin treatment or inserted as a 15 minute exfoliating step into our facials.
